For many years, Lynn Austin nurtured a desire to write but frequent travels and the demands of her growing family postponed her career. When her husband's work took Lynn to Bogota, Colombia, for two years, she used the B.A. she'd earned at Southern Connecticut State University to become a teacher. After returning to the U.S., the Austins moved to Anderson, Indiana, Thunder Bay, Ontario, and later to Winnipeg, Manitoba.

She and her son traveled to Israel during the summer of 1989 to take part in an archaeological dig at the ancient city of Timnah. This experience contributed to the inspiration for her novel Wings of Refuge.

Lynn resigned from teaching to write full-time in 1992. Since then she has published twelve novels. Five of her historical novels have won Christy Awards in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2008, and 2009 for excellence in Christian Fiction. And two of her inspirational fiction books were chosen by Library Journal for their top picks in 2003, and 2005. One of Lynn's novels has been made into a movie for the Hallmark Channel, starring actress Shirley Jones. Ms Jones received a 2006 Emmy Award nomination for her portrayal of Aunt Batty in the film.

Alice was born in Osaka, Japan in the sixties. Her parents were Presbyterian career missionaries. The desire to be a published famous author has never left her. Well, two out of three isn't bad. Alice went to Eastern Mennonite University after graduating from Canadian Academy, an international high school in Kobe, Japan. She has four children--Rachel, Daniel, Benjamin and Elizabeth. Daniel died on 2/2/97 from cancer treatments at the age of four. Since then, Alice founded Daniel's House Publications in her son's memory. This organization reaches out to others who have also lost a child to death. In 2000 and 2003, Alice compiled recipes and memories of children across the world to publish two memorial cookbooks, Slices of Sunlight and Down the Cereal Aisle.

From Susan: I've always loved reading, history, and horses. These things come together in several of my historical books. My young adult novel, Sarah's Long Ride, also spotlights horses and the rugged sport of endurance riding, as does the contemporary romance Trail to Justice. I took a vocational course in horseshoeing after earning a bachelor's degree in history. I don't shoe horses anymore, but the experience has come in handy in writing my books.

Another longtime hobby of mine is genealogy, which has led me down many fascinating paths. I'm proud to be a DAR member! Some of Jim's and my quirkier ancestors have inspired fictional characters.

For many years I worked for the Central Maine Morning Sentinel as a freelancer, covering local government, school board meetings, business news, fires, auto accidents, and other local events, including a murder trial. I've also written many profiles and features for the newspaper and its special sections. This experience was a great help in developing fictional characters and writing realistic scenes. I also published nonfiction articles in several magazines and had several short stories appear in Woman's World, Grit, and Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine.

My husband, Jim, and I moved to his birth state, Oregon, for a while after we were married, but decided to move back to Maine and be near my family. We're so glad we did. It allowed our six children to grow up feeling close to their cousins and grandparents, and some of Jim's family have even moved to Maine!

Our children are all home-schooled. The two youngest are still learning at home. Jim recently retired from his vocation as an editor at a daily newspaper, and we’ve moved from Maine to Kentucky.

Captive Trail is second in a six-book series about four generations of the Morgan family living, fighting, and thriving amidst a turbulent Texas history spanning from 1845 to 1896. Although a series, each book can be read on its own.

Taabe Waipu has run away from her Comanche village and is fleeing south in Texas on a horse she stole from a dowry left outside her family’s teepee. The horse has an accident and she is left on foot, injured and exhausted. She staggers onto a road near Fort Chadbourne and collapses.

I signed with Mary Sue Seymour at the Seymour Agency in 2006, shortly before Joe and I moved my parents and our sons to North Carolina.

Thankful Thursday

I woke up today with hope on my mind.

Hope that what I feared could happen, would happen.

You see, we live in Kirkwood, NY. Our church is in Binghamton, NY.

Our area has been devastated by rains and now the remnants of a hurricane did the final number.

Hope against hope, we prayed that our church would not flood. There is still a God possibility that the damage inside is little, but pictures tell a thousand words.

I responded with sadness for the losses of the community and also for the personal losses within our church building. Losses that are still mysterious but unaccounted for.

I have a little beta fish that is somewhere on my desk, or may be released into the wild waters. My favorite Bible is in my office where I left it, ready to prepare for a Sunday school lesson.

I am thankful that five years ago, I was trained through the flood of 2006 to retrieve data files and restore paperwork.

I am thankful that when we renovated this building to establish a church in this neighborhood that our congregation worked together and became unified with a single purpose.

I am thankful that there was no loss of life.

I am thankful for the new opportunity to shine another example of the light of Jesus to those we worship with and those we minister to.

I am thankful that God has a purpose in this storm.

I am thankful that He leads into His paths of righteousness for His Name's sake.

Thank you God.

Our building is the black roof in the center and our bus sits next to the building.

We will praise Him in this storm!!!!

Singing Sunday

I am in a band. It's called the Cellar Yellers.

We sing mostly oldies; i.e. country & rock, but we also sing gospel and contemporary Christian songs.

Our venues are the town fair, nursing homes, a local club and a restaurant. We don't charge for our music but they do feed us, yum!

We don't get nervous or stage fright, even when we mess up a song. We just have a lot of fun!

Now, when we are asked to sing at our own church, we sweat and shake and can barely remember how to play.

Today was one of those days.

I had to sing (There's Nothing Greater than Grace by Point of Grace) with my BFF Cheryl. We've been wanting to do this song for over a year and finally the timing was perfect.

For a month and a half, we've been practising on our lunch breaks and then solo with the cd's. We even had a run through on the stage on Thursday last week.

The time comes for our special and we walked on stage. Cheryl turns to me and goes completely blank and then I did the same! I couldn't even remember my own lines, let alone hers.

The music started without us, so we had to have them start the cd over.

My, my, the fingers and knees began to shake, so I kept tapping a toe to the beat to hide the shaking.

But as we got into the song, the words were there. It wasn't perfect but we felt good about it.

There's something about singing or speaking in a grace-filled church that can almost bring you to your knees in humility.

I thank the Holy Spirit that He was able to carry us through to minister to someone in the congregation through us simple, broken vessels. He uses our weaknesses to display His Glory. Amen!

Thankful Thursday

Humble Pie

I love pie but I'm not able to chew this very well.

You see, I use my teeth for other purposes. Usually it's to eat but they are also used to form words that I regret later.

I am very organized and when I have an event to organized I forget that there is a team availablt to help me. You can see me charging around making sure this or that isn't out of place. I guess I always think that I need to do it to get it done!

Well, my husband (new Christian) caught me.

As soon as I saw the look on his face, I knew that I'd been performing without care of other's desires to help.

I tried to avert my eyes and detour around him but it didn't work. God was speaking to my heart and I had to admit that I need to change.

So when presented with opportunities to let others serve, I have to step back and let them. God seems to bring those moments more often.

It is hard to admit, sometimes, that I have character traits that need to be changed and rearranged. When I submit, I find that I have a load lifted from my shoulders.

We aren't suppose to carry burdents, we are to leave them at the feet of Jesus.

So Lord, take me and mold me, change me into who you want me to be. I give you that authority and right.

I'd rather eat banana creme than humble pie but maybe I'll enjoy the flavor when I see the results. Less calories, too! LOL!

One special book came across my blog. It's special to me because I lived a lot of the book before my husband became a born-again Christian.

Since then I have been corresponding with the authors and visit their blog often. It's wonderful to see how God works through His people in similar circumstances to perform His Will and pray for others.

I highly recommend Dineen & Lynn's book to anyone who is struggling in a marriage because of an unsaved spouse. It's so important to talk with other Christians for support and insight into their situations.

Publishing books is a team effort, and there are a lot of players—authors, editors, cover designers, marketing staff, and a host of other behind-the-scene folks who help get the books on the shelves. And readers are also a large part of the process. Your input matters, probably more than you know.

When I hear from readers, I really listen to what they want. This is particularly true with my series books. For example, Seek Me With All Your Heart (book #1 in the Land of Canaan series) wraps up nicely at the end, but one of my minor characters (Katie Ann) was left pregnant after her husband left her. I received lots of emails about Katie Ann from readers, so book #2 in the series—The Wonder of Your Love—is Katie Ann’s story.

With the popularity of social media resources such as Facebook, it has allowed me to keep in close contact with readers and to seek opinions and advice. Several times, the publisher and I couldn’t decide on a cover, so we posted the cover options on Facebook and let readers decide. And if you’re posting anywhere on my Facebook Fans Page, your name could end up in a book. I often scan the names there, so you are unknowingly helping me just by being on the site.
Readers also made it clear that they wanted books in digital format, large print, and audio versions. Authors and publishers listened, and most (if not all) of my books are available in multiple formats.

As an author, I hope to write entertaining stories that will be enjoyed for many years. As a reader, I have favorite authors, and I’m not afraid to let them know what I want in future books. We listen to the likes and the dislikes in our effort to bring you the best stories we can, so don’t be shy. Tell us what you think!

Robin Jones Gunn was born in Wisconsin and lived on a dairy farm until her family moved to southern California when she was five years old. The Reluctant Detective sees Faith Morgan arriving back in the region of her birth - Winchester in Hampshire. Recently ordained, she had been working as a curate in an Anglican inner-city church. Within an hour of her arrival at Little Worthy, she witnesses the sudden shocking death of a fellow priest during a communion service at St James's. He had been poisoned with a pesticide mixed with the communion wine. The story gets off to a dramatic start with the previous vicar collapsing as soon as he drank the communion cup, and it holds the interest throughout. There is some romantic interest too. Inspector Ben Shorter starts by sneeringly telling his sergeant, "Ms Morgan is a vicar. One of the ordained," Ben emphasized the word. “She's a card-carrying professional at the touchy-feely stuff.” But he soon starts to feel differently about her again, although she is well aware that he "didn't understand the reality she experienced through her faith. He didn't even recognize its existence. That was the gulf between them." Her own beliefs and doubts are convincingly described, for even she can't help wondering, "What if there is no truth to it?" But for her, as for Pascal before her, it was a gamble worth taking.

Andrea Kuhn Boeshaar has been married for more than 30 years. She and her husband, Daniel, have three adult sons, daughters-in-law, and two precious grandchildren. Andrea's educational background includes the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee, where she studied in English, and Alverno College where she studied in Professional Communications and Business Management.

Andrea has been writing stories and poems since she was a little girl; however, it wasn't until 1984 that she started submitting her work for publication. Bryan earned a bachelor’s degree in print journalism from the University of Tennessee as well as a master’s degree in historical theology at Dallas Theological Seminary. From there he went to the University of Virginia, taking a PhD in the field of ancient church history. He is currently professor of theology at Moody Bible Institute in downtown Chicago, where he has been since 2002. A seventh novel in the series is in preparation.

All of Paul's stories have now been republished by Plume (a division of Penguin Group USA) as The Amish-Country Mysteries, and these editions have been embraced by Christian retailers such as CBD.com, Family Christian Stores, and LifeWay. Future mysteries in the series will still first be published in hard cover editions, as The Amish-Country Mysteries by Ohio University Press, with Plume bringing out the soft cover editions some time later.

Paul and his wife Madonna still travel frequently in Holmes County. He lectures widely about Amish culture at libraries, bookstores, literary societies, and the like, and his books have been featured at Book Expo America and similar professional shows around the country. Paul's novels have been reviewed in prominent journals and newspapers, for instance, Kirkus Reviews, ForeWord Magazine, Publishers Weekly, Library Journal, Booklist, Ohioana Quarterly, and the New York Times Book Review.

For Jonah Miller, shunned by his Old Order sect and cast into the wider world, the summer begins with his decision to kidnap his ten-year-old son from the home of the bishop who had exiled Miller a decade earlier. In his desperation to retrieve the boy, the bishop appeals for help to the only "English" men the sect would ever approve.

Professor Michael Branden and Pastor Caleb Troyer had been looking forward to the kind of sleepy rural summer they had enjoyed as boyhood friends growing up in the small college town of Millersburg. Instead, they plunge into the normally closed Amish culture to find the boy. When the kidnapping leads to murder, they can no longer keep the case from the law. Working sometimes at cross purposes with his friend Sheriff Bruce Robertson, Professor Branden digs through the past to uncover truths that many would prefer to leave undisturbed. Little does he suspect that even the anguished bishop, torn by an insoluble moral dilemma, tragically does not tell everything he knows about the case. Suddenly the vast tangle of Amish and Mennonite settlements that sprawl among several thousand small farms and homesteads seems less bucolic than unknowable and impenetrable.

As they inquire delicately among the peaceful ones, Branden and Troyer learn that the troubles of Jonah Miller began far earlier than the kidnapping, with his Rumschpringe - the customary wild year before taking Amish vows. But his grand Rumschpringe had exploded into a decade of drugs, whiskey, and women, in the company of people no Amish person should meet.

In the tradition of Tony Hillerman, P. L. Gaus depicts a culture that successfully stands outside the mainstream yet interacts with it in complex and fascinating ways, a culture that is every bit as susceptible to the undertow of the human spirit as any we might know.
